THE BLURRED LINES OF PLAGIARISM: Is your Artist At Risk of Stepping Over?

Peter Oxendale is one of the leading musicologists in the world. He was involved with the  ‘Blurred Lines’ case, the Tom Petty/Sam Smith settlement and literally hundreds of other copyright infringement opinions and cases in the UK and around the world

Peter will explain how he came to be a forensic musicologist. (He was one of the most successful keyboard players and musical directors in the UK and toured extensively with  Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Alison Moyet, Paul Young, Bonnie Tyler and Chris de Burgh, as well as many others.)  He will then give invaluable advice and information about:

  • SAMPLES: When is a sample considered to constitute an infringement of the copyright vested in a sound recording? What are the tests for infringement of copyright in the sound recording that need to be applied. Just how careful artists and managers have to be in this area. US lawyers are currently trawling through big hits for any sample no matter how small resulting in substantial financial settlements.
  • JOINT AUTHORSHIP:  On what grounds a session player can claim to be a “joint author” (a co-writer) of a song? The importance of getting everything in writing before a recording is released and the possible consequences if you don’t.
  • COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT: What are the tests for infringement of the copyright vested in a musical or literary work that need to be applied? Do the laws on copyright differ in different territories and to what extent.

This will be a very rare opportunity to learn from, arguably, the world’s most respected expert in this field. After the presentation there will be a question and answer session.
