Brexit Considerations for Managers

29 January 2019

As we enter a period of uncertainty on the lead up to Brexit, we have gathered some information that managers should be aware of if the UK leaves the European Union in March without a deal. This information has been taken from various sources and is subject to change depending on the decisions made by the UK Government. Managers should ensure that they are in dialogue with business partners to take the necessary precautions which are relevant to their artists’ businesses.

The Government has issued information to say that from the 29th March 2019, drivers from the UK will need extra documentation to drive in the EU and EEA. In the event that the UK leaves the EU without a deal, UK drivers may also need an international driving permit (IDP) to drive in the EU and EAA. Please speak to your insurance company to confirm that your insurance policies are valid outside the UK and that any necessary considerations are in place when travelling from the 29th March. Steven Howell from Music Insurance Brokers has said most companies will have taken the steps required to allow their businesses to operate as normal and to be able to offer the same insurance policies, but it is worth contacting your insurance company to check that your cover won’t be affected.

Some management companies have included a day off between UK and EU tour dates in case of any customs issues whilst their artists are on tour. Here are a series of guides with some useful information you can refer to:

  • The Arts Council England has released a guide which addresses a series of issues including travelling to the EU post Brexit for those planning tours, the implications on the movement of goods for those who are moving instruments and equipment across borders, plus the likely effects on copyright and intellectual property rights. • Centtrip have published some information about risks, costs and disruptions businesses may face and have launched a Brexit desk to help businesses. Read more here.
  • The government has issued some passport rules for travel to Europe after Brexit. You can find out more here.

Additional things to consider are any changes to visa requirements, especially for UK artists performing in the EU plus any new rules and charges for the import and export of merchandise and goods while on tour.

Please keep an eye on the MMF newsletter and website for any updates between now and March.
