Google Search Update

21 October 2014

Google recently highlighted a number of changes they’re testing, and in some cases already implementing, to their search function in a blog post titled ‘Continued progress on fighting piracy’ on their Google Public Policy website.

The changes make it easier for users to search for legitimate sources of content and include:

  • demoting autocomplete predictions that return results with many DMCA demoted sites
  • refining the search ranking signal in ways that they expect should downrank sites with large numbers of DMCA’s
  • testing new ad formats in search results on queries related to music and movies that help people find legitimate sources of media, as well as testing other ways of directing pointing people to legitimate sources of media

You can view them in more detail here and download their refreshed ‘How Google Fights Piracy’ report here.

It’s great to see our policy of constructive engagement with the tech section of the recorded music business producing results.
