Notes from the SXSW MMF Meet-up

23 March 2012

A huge thank you to everyone who made it to our meet-up in SXSW last week. Here are some quick notes Jonny managed to write down post-meeting to share with those of you who couldn’t make it…

Embracing digital technology to grow the market.

The general consensus was that we need to embrace the various global platforms for both streaming and download – including Deezer, Spotify, RDO (Canada), Vevo etc. It seems that all of these services are vying for exclusive content from artists to grow hit rates and viewing duration in this competitive market. These services are realising that the management community is the only conduit for this content and there was some positivity about ustislisng this position to shore up the artists in a label cornered market.

NDA’s and labels.

Third partys are also a global issue and there seemed to be strong consensus that we need more transparency. We are continuing to push for this in the UK.

Finance.

This was a really interesting topic. Finding that first 50k to get projects off the ground also seems to be a global problem. Publishers are helping to some degree, as are Socan (Canada) but the general feedback was that there is massive scope from third party VC investment in this area. It seems that there have been various successes across projects with this route and we are now trying to work out a way communicating this as an industry to the VC market.

The event was hosted by Jonny Dawson (MMF/ATC) and Adam Tudhope (MMF Board Member/Everbody’s MD).
