MMF February Events Recap (Radio 1 event and Monthly Manager Meetup featuring mysnapp)

10 March 2019

MMF @ Radio 1 and 1Xtra – 13th February Summary

On the 13th February MMF Members gathered at Radio 1 to hear from Chris Price and the Radio 1 and 1Xtra teams. The event provided Chris the opportunity to update the MMF Membership on their latest developments and introduce the new music team at Radio 1, along with getting to know us all better.

MMF Chair Paul Craig (Nostromo Management) kicked off the meeting:

“Recently I received a call from Chris, who I’ve known for many years, suggesting that the MMF come into Radio 1 which I thought was a brilliant idea. I want to thank Chris for inviting us here today. It’s greatly appreciated, and another example of how the MMF is now working increasingly closely across all aspects of the music business.

I grew up listening to Radio One every day and most nights and it introduced me to virtually every artist I love. It has had a huge importance in my life as a manager I’ve worked very closely with the station over my whole career and experienced incredible highs of playlist ads, live broadcasts, live lounges, Maida Vale sessions… a few lows, but I’ve met some incredibly wonderful people over the journey as well.

The station has changed and evolved with all the new opportunities and challenges that have arisen over the years. We are now in a new streaming landscape and I’m convinced that Radio 1 is crucially important and will continue to be a very vital entity and continue to spread music across the UK and beyond…”

Chris and the team went onto introduce the Radio 1 and 1Xtra teams and update on latest activities and plans for the future. To request a copy of the presentation shown at the event, please email joseph@themmf.net.

MMF Monthly Manager Meetup – 27th February – Summary

As a continuation of our Monthly Manager Meetup series, we put on an event around “Exploring alternative revenue streams” at PPL. The event featured MMF team Member Paul Bonham outlining funding options with MMF member and funding consultant Liza Buddy, James Plester and Emma McGann talking all things YouNow and new ways of making money thinking outside the box, plus MMF Associate mysnapp outlining what they do and how they work with artists. Below is a recap and some key takeaways from the event.

James Plester and Emma McGann – YouNow

Interviewed by the MMF’s Nicky Carder, James discussed how he has been building profile and revenue with his artist Emma McGann through the platform YouNow.

James talked through how they had built up Emma’s following on YouNow, and the large amount of time spent dedicated to develop a following.

“Originally when we started we were actually putting in six hours a day – a long time spent on it, we’ve now got it to an hour a day, but the thing is, you have to realise especially online – if you’re not there you’re not going to get that following, so the more time you put into your chance to get people to come in.”

They then went onto discuss how went onto talk through how the following built up through YouNow is translating in other areas – streaming gigs etc.

mysnapp

Finally, Lee Murphy and Justin Dixon introduced the MMF membership to mysnapp, discussing how they have created a new revenue stream for artists and managers through the platform.

A summary with some key takeaways below:

mysnapp (soon to re-launch as Post Kulture) work with artists, managers and labels across 3 main tiers:

1. Shoppable music videos

mysnapp make the fashion from an artist’s music video and all kinds of content shoppable. They just need the fashion credits from the stylist and can have an artist’s page live in just 2 days!
Each item from your artist’s video sold via mysnapp = £££ back to you!

2. Artist Collaborations

Taking the partnership further, mysnapp also create awesome “fashion” brands for artists which are then showcased in their music videos.
Think Pharrell’s Billionaire Boys Club and Oli Sykes’ Drop Dead; mysnapp provide artists with a full design service and access to their incredible roster of talented fashion designers.
With artist collaborations, the profit potential is much higher than with shoppable videos!

3. Shoppable Content

In addition to shoppable videos and artist collaborations, mysnapp also create super cool, shoppable content with artists to help tell their story, drive additional awareness and fan engagement!

Shoppable music videos

All of the fashion from Rak-Su’s new video is now shoppable on mysnapp in partnership with Modest! Management & Sony Music.

Shoppable Content

mysnapp create short-form shoppable content. They are currently filming Grime Kids – a 10 x 10 online series that includes limited edition artist-designed pieces to shop.

They do all of this with no financial risk to the artist!

What are the benefits

• Increased music video views helping chart position.
• A new source of revenue from a music video.
• Insightful data which can be used for brand partnership/sponsorship opportunities.
• Great SEO.
• No disruption to the label and artist.

Featured questions from the audience:

Q – “What sort of level of artists do you look to work with? I’ve just been on website and obviously it’s all quite well known artists etc – so what’s your minimum required for it to make sense for getting mysnapp on board?”

A “mysnapp open to talking to artists at all levels – just get in touch!”

Our next Manager Meetup event is on Wednesday 20th March, featuring Soundcloud and PEEX. Members can email joseph@themmf.net to RSVP.
