YouTube Music Launches in the UK

20 June 2018

YouTube Music has now been launched in Austria, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

YouTube Music is the latest streaming platform to be launched in the UK and beyond – a subscription service offering customers an advert-free experience. The service is priced at the same rate as Spotify, Apple Music and Tidal’s basic rate.

YouTube’s new music streaming service includes; official songs, albums, thousands of playlists and artist radio plus YouTube’s large catalogue of remixes, live performances, covers and music videos. It allows users to listen to ad-free music, listen in the background and download content.

In addition, YouTube Red has been rebranded YouTube Premium, which includes a more extensive variety of video content, priced at £11.99 for an individual subscription and £17.99 for a family subscription. This new rate is slightly higher than competitors Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. This service includes the same features as the music service with the addition of ad-free video, play in the background options, video download for offline use and exclusive content.

The restructuring of the platform, along with the launch of “Music in this Video” crediting system, should allow for creators and copyright owners to be properly credited for the use of their intellectual property. We hope this will also provide a more transparent overview of the use of music on the service, and in turn, highlight revenue streams, not previously exploited through the YouTube service.
