BBC Charter Renewal

02 September 2015

The Government recently published its Green Paper on the future of the BBC which directly questioned the distinctiveness of what is being offered by the broadcaster. It is essential that as an industry and wider music community we help highlight the diversity and support given to music by the BBC in order to secure its future funding, and to try and shield this vital part of the music eco-system from any cuts.

#LetItBeeb (http://letitbeeb.co.uk) is a campaign organised by UK Music on behalf of the entire UK music industry and community. Its purpose is to unite music fans, artists, songwriters, composers, managers, industry and performers of all ages, genres and locations in support of the vital and diverse music services the BBC provides and to help highlight just how distinct and unique the BBC’s relationship with music is, and how it contributes directly to our global success.

What could these cuts mean tangibly? At very worst it could mean the merging or sale of either Radio 1 & 2, a diversification and dilution of the BBC’s commitment to play and introduce new home-grown talent from all genres. Perhaps even less music on TV…whatever happens, cuts would mean less opportunities for artists to break through, reach new fans and build their careers.

The government’s charter review process is currently underway and will guide the future structure, funding and focus of the corporation for the next ten years. The public consultation ends on October 8th – but discussions will continue throughout the year and well into 2016, so it is key that we garner as much vocal support for BBC music services as possible. The voice of artists and managers will be key to helping our message reach the attention of the decision makers within this process and Parliament.
The campaign will launch publically in the next weeks – and we would love to encourage you and your artists to be involved.

Please contact james.murtagh-hopkins@ukmusic.org for more information on how you can participate and help spread the word.
