The Music Ally Debate: “I can see clearly now” – transparency in the digital age – 17th June

Sponsored by Counterpoint and hosted by ReedSmith

The music industry has long suffered from accusations that it has not been transparent enough in its dealings; in the old days it was about black box income, breakages clauses in artists’ label contracts , unfair publishing deals, delayed royalty payments and underhand retail racking agreements. Digital was supposed to help change all of this with the ability to transact and track transactions in nanoseconds. But while much has been modernised, new concerns have arisen while some of the old complaints still remain. As streaming looks set to become the dominant model of distribution, is there a danger that the business is getting more complex and less transparent?

This Music Ally event, sponsored by Counterpoint and hosted by ReedSmith, puts the issue of transparency under the spotlight and considers what can and should change to make the 21st century music business fit for purpose in the digital age.

Is there enough of an understanding of how labels and artists get paid from digital services?
What’s the equitable share for artists from streaming services?
To what extent have publishers and the collecting societies really changed?
Has digital in reality introduced new complexities to the business which frustrate attempts to make the business more transparent?
Is complete transparency even possible and do we even want it?
