Daytime Contract Negotiation Workshop – £20 (Limited Spaces)

Hunter S Thompson is reputed to have said that; “The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side.” It is the combination of an artist’s creative genius and commercial naivety that allows the unscrupulous to prey on artists. The Contracts Workshop will not qualify participants as lawyers, accountants or business professional but it will start to equip you with some of the tools that will help protect your career/business.

The Workshop will begin with a short presentation on how the business side of the industry works, where the money comes from and how it gets siphoned off, followed by an equally short presentation on some basic points of law. The Workshop will then negotiate a contract under time pressure. The negotiation will include having to negotiate with the music business publisher/record company. The aim is to provide a setting that although not totally realistic will bring to the attention of the participants some crucial points regarding how to read and understand a contract. Finally, there will be a read through of the whole contract highlighting some points, legal, accounting and common sense.

The Workshop will enable you to understand what rights are being exchanged, what the consequences might be, to be able gauge more accurately your own bargaining position and what you would expect to see in the contract to help develop and promote your artistic career. It will also enable you to focus on issues and work more closely with your professional advisers in reaching agreements that benefit your career.

This Workshop is presented by Simon Long, lawyer, of Collins Long and Eric Longley, tax accountant, of CC Young & Co and former MD at Factory Records.  Both presenters have a history of working in the music industry with well-known and developing artists. The Workshop is suitable for artists and artist managers.
